When you broke up with your girlfriend or boyfriend, how many times did you go back to give it another shot? Once it was over, that was it, right? On to the next one. That’s how I felt about Destiny, yet, I’m giving it another shot.
I wish I still had documentation of how much I hated Destiny when it originally came out. I thrashed it. The shooting held it up but once I reached maximum level and could only move up with Light, that did it for me. I traded it in. I didn’t promise myself I wouldn’t play it again but I had no intention to play it again.
Then The Taken King came out; and everyone praised it as an improvement upon the suspect systems of the original release. Bungie hired Nolan North to redo the voice acting of the pitifully boring voice of Peter Dinklage and more importantly, they changed the leveling system across the entire game.
I still think the shooting is top notch and as I play it now, I’m reminded that it is a great shooter. Explore missions are still horrible but now they seem to include more random encounters, which is something I wanted originally and Bungie was working on by the time I left. The mission structure is just as linear but I’m hoping when I reach The Taken King content, that will have changed.
Lots of people still play Destiny. Friends that agreed Destiny was a funky dump of mediocrity wouldn’t join me in separating from it and playing better games. So I had to give credence that shooting alone could drive the desires of a FPS fan. But that’s also the desire that drove me to play Mario games. How much depth is in Super Mario 64’s story? Everything is a set up to give the playground context. That’s what Destiny is. A shooting gallery with context for its existence and it so happens that it’s a fun shooting gallery for many to play in.
I hope as I return to the same spot I left my Titan (I’m using a Warlock now), I can push through to The Taken King content and at least express that it is a fun shooting gallery to play in.
